What exactly does Kithera do?

Kithera helps traveling families explore local childcare options at their destination. You tell us where you're going, when, and what you need — we look into what programs exist in that area, whether they accept temporary or visiting-family enrollments, and what their requirements typically are. We follow up by email with what we find.

Does submitting a request book childcare?

No. Submitting a request starts a conversation. It doesn't reserve a spot, create an account, or commit you to anything. Any actual enrollment or care arrangement must be confirmed directly between you and the childcare provider.

Is there a cost to submit a request?

No. Submitting a request is free. Kithera is in an early pilot phase and we're not charging families for the search assistance we provide.

What information do I need to provide?

Your destination, travel dates, your child's age, and the hours or days you'd need care. The more context you share — the reason for your trip, any specific needs, your flexibility on timing — the better we can understand your situation and find relevant options.

How quickly will you follow up?

We aim to respond to every request, but we can't commit to a specific timeframe. This is a pilot with limited capacity. We'll be honest if we can't find anything suitable for your situation.

What if you can't find anything?

We'll tell you. If we can't find options that fit your destination, dates, or child's age, we'll say so rather than send you something unhelpful. We'd rather be honest about the limits of what we can find.

Can I submit a request for multiple children?

Yes. Include all children who would need care in your request, along with their ages. Age range matters — infant and toddler care is often harder to arrange on a temporary basis than care for older children.

How far in advance should I submit a request?

The earlier the better. Requests submitted well in advance give us more time to explore options and give providers more time to respond. A single day of care is harder to arrange than a week or more, and short notice limits what's possible.

We're gathering requests to understand where families need help most. Coverage is uneven in this pilot — some locations will have more options than others. We don't restrict submissions by destination; we'll tell you honestly what we find (or don't find) for your specific location.

Does my child's age affect what you can find?

Yes, significantly. Infant and toddler care is often harder to find on a temporary basis — many programs have waitlists or don't accept short-term enrollments for very young children. Older children generally have more options. We'll be upfront about this when we follow up.

We look into licensed childcare centers, nurseries, and similar programs that may accept temporary or visiting-family enrollments. We're not currently focused on individual nannies, au pairs, or informal care arrangements.

Single-day care is harder to arrange than multi-day or weekly care. Many programs require a minimum enrollment period or advance notice. We'll look into what's available, but we want to set realistic expectations — a single day is the most difficult request to fulfill.

Are you building a marketplace or booking platform?

Not yet. Right now, Kithera is a search and research service — we help families understand what options exist. We're not a marketplace, we don't process bookings, and we don't manage payments or care arrangements. Whether that changes depends on what we learn from this pilot.
